2. Rule 9 "Allowed material" - wind-up motors, 05.09.2008

Q: Are wind-up motors allowed?

A: No, in this year, wind-up motors are not allowed.

3. Rule 9 "Allowed material" - number of motors, 05.09.2008

Q: Could you please explain the rule concerning the allowed number of motors?

A: Example 1: If your robot has three motors, you may not have any other motor in the competition area, even if it's only for weight or decoration; even if it's in a box, off the field. Example 2: If your robot has two motors, but you have multiple attachments to motorize, you must design a way to switch the 3rd motor from one attachment to the next.

4. Rule 9 "Allowed material" & 10 "Software", 05.09.2008

Q: Why is the software and the material predetermined?

A: This rule should ensure that all teams participating have the same guidlines and requirements.

5. Rule 20 "Starting-Method" - release the robot, 05.09.2008

Q: When starting, is it allowed to just release the robot, while the motors are already running?

A: No, this year, the robot must not move while in starting-position. It then may be started by pushing the start-button or activating a sensor.

6. Rule 5 "Strategic Objects" - adjusting the robot in Base, 05.09.2008

Q: Within Base, we adjust our robot with a strategic object. May this object stay in the base or do we have to remove it?

A: The object may stay within the base, but you must not touch it when the robot starts.

7. FLL Challenge Set, 05.09.2008

Q: Does the Challenge Set and the table we use for practicing differ from the ones at the Regional Tournament?

A: It is attempted, that all the Challenge Sets and Tournament Tables are identical and correct. However, some differences may occur, e.g. with condition and dents and dints under the mat, corrugation of the mat, cracks on the lateral border of the table, differences in lighting conditions, differences of the pole-construction for the lights and bolts on the border of the table. Pleases consider this when building and programming the robot. Further questions concerning conditions at special tournaments have to be posed directly to the host of the respective tournament.

8. Model "house" - starting position red lever, 05.09.2008

Q: What is the starting position of the red lever of the house?

A: When starting the house is in the down position and the red lever shows toward west (see sketch).

9. Mission "Bury Carbon Dioxid" - score, 05.09.2008

Q: What is the maximum score for mission "Bury Carbon Dioxid"?

A: There is a total of 4 carbon dioxid models. Each corrrectely placed carbon dioxid model is worth 5 points. Therefore the maximimum score for this mission is 20.

10. Mission "Find Agreement" - Consultation of the other team, 09.09.2008 Q: Is it possible, to consult with the other team regarding the mission "Find Agreement" at the tournament before the Robot Game starts? (e.g. We'll try to perform the mission first, if we fail, it's your turn!)

A: Yes, this is possible and allowed.

11. Mission "Insulate the house" - score, 09.09.2008

Q: Concerning the mission "insulate the house", do we get 10 points for each insulation-brick or is it 10 points for all the insulation-bricks?

A: You will get 10 points, if both insulation-bricks touch the green grid area.

12. Rule 2 "Participation" - Introduction of other teammembers, 09.09.2008

Q: Is it right, that there is a reform regarding introducing and substituting a player at the tournament table during the Robot Game?

A: Yes, that is right. The participants at the tournament table may change from match to match and during one match. Note: there may only be 2 team members AT the tournament table.

13. Mission "Deliver an Ice Core Drilling Machine" - score, 09.09.2008

Q: What is the maximum score to earn at the mission "Deliver an Ice Core Drilling Machine"?

A: The correctly placed drilling machine is worth 20 points. If you raise the drill assembly completely, you will be given additonal 10 points, so you can earn a maximum of 30 points.

14. Rule 28 "Score Determination" - order, 11.09.2008

Q: At the end of the match, how is the mission "Construct Levees" scored, whe the mission "Test Levees" is accomplished first? The mission "Construct Levees" is to be done by using a strategical object, for bringing the levees to the shore. At the end of the match, it is not possible to find out, if the wheel of the storm-simulator was blocked by the strategical object.

A: The missions can be done in random order. The wheel of the storm-simulator must be able to roll freely. If strategical objects are placed into the wheel's runway afterwards, it is irrelevant for evaluation of the mission "Test Levees". The referee notes the order of the missions and decides wether the strategical objects were in the wheel's runway, at the end of the match.

15. Rule 22 "Active Robot touched" - penalty objects, 11.09.2008

Q: Is it allowed, to remove levees that fell down?

A: Yes, fallen down levees are removed as well. They aren't available for further mission-attempts.

16. Mission "Deliver an Ice Core Drilling Machine" - drill assembly, 11.09.2008

Q: Is it allowed, to bring the ice core drilling machine to the Base and put the drill assembly upright by hand?

A: Yes, that is allowed. The ice core drilling machine must be brought to Base by the robot. While outside the Base, neither the robot nor the drilling machine may be touched by a teammember! If the drilling machine is touched while bringing it to the Base, it is removed from field and the robot needs to restart its mission from the Base (see rule 22).

17. Mission "Construct Levees" - touch penalty objects, 11.09.2008

Q: The missions-task says: „If the only levee blocks available are being moved by the robot at the time of the touch, one of those will be taken after the robot is carried back to Base.” What is, if the robot won't go back to Base?

A: According to rule 22, the robot needs to be put back to Base and is held inactive from time of touching. The robot may not stay on the Field. If the touch happens to happen right at the end of the match, the robot must be taken back to Base as well and the ref will remove a levee, even if the match is already finished.

18. Mission "Deliver an Ice Core Drilling Machine" - correct placement, 11.09.2008

Q: What is meant by „correctly placed“ and „drill assembly part put vertically“ respectively? Is it also ok, if the machine is put on the side?

A: The ice core drilling machine is placed correctly, if it soley touches the model „"Research Area" and / or the mat within the model. The drill assembly part is held vertical, if it is vertical to the model, no matter in which position the model is in. Thus it scores, if the drill assembly is put vertical while the ice core drilling machine is within the Research Area.

19. Rule 29 "Word Definition" - touch, 11.09.2008

Q: When the insulaion is brought to the green-grid area, do both bricks have to touch the green-grid area?

A: This is allowed.

21. Rule 24 "Stray Objects" - removal of carbon dioxid – tire location mark, 11.09.2008'

Q: Are the black tire location marks of the carbon dioxid non-value objects or are they part of the tasks and may not be removed?

A: The marks (black rings) are part of the model, as long as the carbon dioxid molecules are in starting position. When the carbon dioxid molecules were moved, the rings become non-value stray objects and can be removed, after consultation with the ref (see rule 24)

22. Rule 24 "Stray Objects" - switching scoring objects, '11.09.2008

Q: When does the movement of scoring objects not lead to a strategic advance (what would be an equal position)?

A: A strategic advance is given, as soon as moving or leads to a change in awarding of points. Models in starting positions may not be moved! Stray objects can be removed or moved, as long as they are not put into a scoring area, in which they would score points. Objects within scoring areas can be moved within this area.

23. Rule 10 "Software" - expansion of Robolab, 11.09.2008
